When you spend your early years on an island in the Caribbean, you’re guaranteed a different experience than a child growing up on the U.S. mainland.  Kids on St. Croix play outside every day of the year, not just during the select spring and summer days.  But the island experience for youth goes far beyond the beautiful weather.  Here a few of the organizations that truly maximize the island experience for children:

St. Croix Junior Sailing

A collaboration between the St. Croix Yacht Club and the St. Croix Youth Sailing Foundation, St. Croix Junior Sailing promotes the love of sailing with the youth of the island.  They offer programs for sailors ages 8-15 and beyond that, support the high school sailing team at Good Hope Country Day School.  Programs include beginner opti, opti green, opti racing (red, white and blue fleets), sunfish and laser.  The program recently acquired a new coach from Florida who brings 14 years of sailing experience to the youth he instructs.  The organization is currently fundraising by selling apparel and other merchandise online and Life in the Left Lane.

Ridge to Reef Farm

Ridge to Reef is the sustainable farm in the rain forest on the west side of St. Croix.  For youth who want to volunteer, there is much to learn about the growth of food.  The farm is continually offering new programs for kids and families.  For example, in March 2015 they will host a long weekend teaching “Bush Skills” (also known as outdoor / home-steading / primitive skills).

Mount Victory Camp

Mt. Victory Camp is located on the west end of St. Croix and is a popular place for multi-family weekend camp outs.

Virgin Islands Triathlon Federation

The V.I. Triathlon Federation hosts a series of youth events to keep island kids challenged and physically active outdoors.
