Caribbean Dance Company Recital Showcases Local Talent

The Caribbean Dance Company, celebrating 37 years on-island, produced recitals on Friday, May 23 and Saturday, May 24 at the St. Croix Educational Complex Auditorium.  Performances ranged from preschool ballet to teen /adult tap.

Ballet

The recital opened with a ballet routine in which a small group of dancers (a wide variety of ages), mimicked the angelic movements of their instructor.  All were costumed in flowing white dresses with sparkling embellishments.

The teen / adult ballet class presented an interpretation of midnight in the garden of good and evil.  The dance opened with half the class dancing on-pointe, costumed in bright orange and pink costumes representing good.  The balance of the dancers entered thereafter clothed in gray and black representing evil.

Tap

To close the first act, the teen / adult tap class danced to “Happy” by Pharrell Williams.  The high energy routine was well received by the audience.

During the second act, the intermediate tap class danced to “Roar” by Katy Perry.  These dancers were costumed in lime green and black lace.

Modern / Cultural

A number of contemporary and Caribbean dances were presented throughout the evening, including a tribute to the late Nelson Mandela.  Each was beautifully costumed and uniquely choreographed.

To close the recital, a teen / adult group of dancers performed a contemporary routine in broad, brightly-colored skirts.
