Characters of the Caribbean: Artist Laura Ballard

How did you find yourself living on St. Croix?

I moved to St.Croix in 1998. My husband and I had very demanding careers and we decided to rediscover island life.  I was raised in Puerto Rico so the Caribbean was a given.  St. Croix with its beauty, its territory status, English speaking, and amazing sense of community won our hearts.

What is your favorite spot on-island and why?

Hmm… if you make me pick just one it would be underwater on a Frederiksted Pier dive.  It’s always exhilarating and teaming with creatures. A sunset cocktail afterwards is perfection.

What is the most memorable experience you’ve had living on St. Croix?

Trying to think of my single most memorable experience on St. Croix just makes me laugh.  It’s truly impossible.  I love it here and have had many amazing, memorable experiences.  One of the top ten though would be seeing a leatherback turtle lay her eggs one night at Sandy Point.  That is a marvel of mother nature.

What is the best piece of advice you can give on making the leap to island life?

If you decide to move to the Caribbean my best advice is to get involved.  Whether scuba diving, beach walking, animal rescue, the arts, or whatever… get out and get involved.  It’s the friendships you make and your passion for life that make living here so rewarding. Get out and meet your fellow Crucians. And relax…things are slower here. Deal with it.

Laura Ballard is an artist, animal lover, and co-owner of The Blue Mutt Gallery & Studio in Christiansted.  In her spare time she enjoys scuba diving, beach combing and spending time with friends.
