Characters of the Caribbean: Quiana Adams

1. In a few sentences, how did you find yourself living on St. Croix?

I moved to St. Croix in February 2004 between undergrad and graduate schools.  I had submitted my applications and came to island while awaiting responses.  Almost on-arrival, I got a job as chief photographer for the St. Croix Avis [daily newspaper].  So when the fall semester quickly rolled around, I deferred for one year.  Now 11 years later, New York University is still awaiting my enrollment!?!

2. What is your favorite spot on-island and why?

I love the rain forest [on the west end of St. Croix].  Mahogany Road specifically, because it’s peaceful and calming.

3. What is the most memorable experience you’ve had living on St. Croix?

When my husband and I found our first apartment high on a hill in Butler Bay.  We were both looking for a place to suit our needs, his much different than mine, as he was coming straight from life at the farm [Ridge to Reef].  We heard through mutual friends this amazing place was available.  For us it fulfilled the vision of what island life should look like, with a 230 degree ocean view of Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and St. John.  Some mornings we’d find cows grazing in our yard, which to us was a charm of island life.

4. When you go off-island, where do you travel most often?

Most frequently we visit my husband’s family on their farm in Florida.  We also visit my family in New York and California.

5. What is the best piece of advice you can give on making the leap to island life?

Have patience with your island experience.  There is really a one year minimum to adjust to the environment and begin to understand the culture.  Think of that first year as time for observation and data collection.  Keep a positive attitude and find which elements of the island match your lifestyle.
