Dealing with Rock Fever

Some St. Croix residents could stay happily on-island for life without leaving, perfectly content on their little rock.  Others get something we refer to as “rock fever,” an inkling or itch to get off island and travel elsewhere.  For some, rock fever can be cured simply by hopping to a neighboring rock. For others, it takes a trip to the US mainland (with direct flights to Miami, Atlanta and Charlotte, this is no problem).  Here are some destination ideas when rock fever strikes:

St. Thomas

By hopping over to St. Thomas, direct flights to Boston are also an option if you’re looking for a big city fix.

If you make St. Thomas your final destination, this busy little island offers extensive shopping with stores like White House Black Market, bebe, MAC cosmetics and many high-end retailers. It also has more activity options, like zip-lining, as they receive so much cruise ship traffic. With nearby St. John and the British Virgin Islands, you can also charter a boat from St. Thomas to see several international islands in one outing.

Puerto Rico

For some island residents (especially ladies) the limited number of stores on St. Croix causes an occasional desire to do some serious shopping. For these times, Puerto Rico is a great nearby escape. With inexpensive and frequent flights, it’s an easy jump. San Juan features Plaza las Americas mall and several shopping outlets.

While you’re there, it’s nice to dine somewhere different. Whether you’re craving Taco Bell or Fogo de Chao, San Juan is a major city with lots of restaurants and entertainment options. It also draws many major music tours and has a great nightlife scene.

St. Maarten

If you want to feel really far away, a quick 20-minute flight to St. Maarten will make you feel teleported to Europe. The island is divided into French and Dutch sides, each with its own unique appeal. Prepare to be impressed by fantastic dining and entertainment. If you’re into people watching, it can’t be beat with a diverse international crowd.

US Mainland

While just about anywhere in the United States will be dramatically different from St. Croix, a few cities in particular seem to give the best contrast for Crucians with rock fever. New York City is about as far away as you can get in terms of population and pace of life. Las Vegas, with it’s in-your-face bright lights and crazy entertainment, is also a far cry from the island. If you’re looking for drastically different weather, ski vacations in Colorado or Utah are popular picks by island residents. Just be sure to dust off your coat!
