Finding Fresh Fruit and Fish on St. Croix

One of the charms of living on the island of St. Croix is roadside fruit and fish stands.  Here you can find fresh produce like bananas, pineapples, mangoes, avocados, etc.  You will also find fisherman set-up with stands with whatever they’ve caught that day like mahi mahi (dolphin fish), wahoo, crab, Caribbean lobster and more.

Common Locations of Fresh Fish / Fruit Stands:

– Outside of the Kingshill post office (pictured above)

– Outside of the Christiansted Downtown post office (off Company Street)

– Across the street from Plaza Extra East grocery store (Sunny Isle area)

– Kmart Appliance parking lot (Sunny Isle)

– North shore road between Golden Rock and Five Corners intersections

– All along Queen Mary Highway

Other Fruit Resources

Quality Foods (south shore) has made great strides in recent years to carry locally grown produce in their fairly new cash-and-carry market

Ridge to Reef Farm (rain forest west) is the biggest concentration of local growing and offers bushel shares for weekly pick-up east or west

Art Farm (south shore, east) is another great grower of fresh produce

– Farmer’s Market (Le Reine, mid-island) is open Saturday’s starting at 6 a.m.

Other Fish Resources

– Frederiksted fish market (south end of town at the boat ramp)

– Christiansted boardwalk

Here you will often find fishing boats coming in with their catch-of-the-day to sell.  Especially for charter boats, tourists reel in their catch and unfortunately have no place to take it while staying in hotels.  Just watch for fish being cleaned to see what’s for sale.  Often fisherman want to sell the entire fish to one buyer, so share with a group of friends (or plan to fill your freezer).
