Gardening Year-round in the Tropics

If you have a green thumb, St. Croix is the place for you.  Those who enjoy growing plants, flowers, fruits and veggies can do so year-round in the tropical weather.  Plenty of sunshine and rainfall (border-lining rain forest level on the west end of the island), make for ideal growing conditions.

Orchids Abound

When people think island flora, they think orchids.  St. Croix’s weather allows a variety of these delicate blooms to thrive.  Island resident and gardening enthusiast David Johnson has mastered the challenging art of growing orchids.  He has an extensive garden in and around his St. Croix home.  Flowers are a calming passion for Johnson, who spends time everyday in his garden.  He often shares photos with his Facebook friends of his most beautiful blooms.

The St. Croix Orchid Society hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including orchid shows and growing seminars.

Learning the Gardening Ropes

Those wanting to delve into island gardening can get a head start attending annual island events such as the Ag Fair or Christmas Spoken Here at the St. George Village Botanical Gardens.  At both events plants and flowers are sold inexpensively.  Local vendors are happy to share their insights for growing success.  Just ask for recommendations on planting, feeding and watering.

Growing Food

If you are interested in clean eating, St. Croix makes it easy to grow foods right in your backyard throughout the year.  Many island neighborhoods are filled with mango; banana; papaya; avocado; and chiya trees.  The experts at Ridge to Reef Farm grow a variety of foods including tomatoes; eggplant; okra; radishes; long beans; sprouts; bok choy; and basil.
