Recently a diverse group of families celebrated the annual Holi Festival on St. Croix at Cramer’s Park.  This year it was held on Sunday, March 12 in the late morning.  The international holiday officially began that evening and lasted until the following night (Monday, March 13).

Worldwide and especially on-island, the celebration is open to anyone.  Attendees are encouraged to show-up wearing all white clothing they don’t care about ruining.  Everyone brings water guns and colored water is provided in bright shades of pink and purple.  The result is a painted crowd which take a dip in the ocean to rinse out afterward.  Naturally the inclusion of squirt guns draws lots of families with young kids to this event!

All in attendance bring a vegan dish to share in a family-style lunch afterward.  Traditionally after the smearing of colors, participants in Holi festivities eat and drink together, partaking in local delicacies.

According to Wikipedia, Holi is a traditional Hindu celebration recognized in Nepal and India.  It’s commonly known as the festival of love or colors.  Its purposes are to meet new people, laugh and play, among other positive intentions.  It’s also a time to forgive and reconcile wrongs in friendships or repair damaged relationships.  The timing is meant to celebrate the end of winter and the beginning of spring (but for those of us lucky enough to live on-island, we enjoy spring and summer weather year-round).
