How To Make St. Croix Feel Like Home for the Holidays

Christmas tree on beachFor many, staying on St. Croix in November and December versus traveling to visit family is a no-brainer.  When the states and many other parts of the world experience ice and snow, why not enjoy 88 degree sunny weather on-island?  Not to mention, when the Christmas winds (aka trade winds) blow in this time of year, the climate is particularly perfect.  The week between Christmas and the new year is actually the most popular for tourism annually.  But if you’re a resident or snowbird on St. Croix and the balmy breeze doesn’t scream winter wonderland, how do you make the island feel like home for the holidays?

Celebrate often

Starting with Jump-Up around Thanksgiving, you’ll find many opportunities to celebrate the holidays in island style.  The Crucian Christmas Festival kicks off with the Christmas Boat Parade and concludes with the Carnival Adult’s Parade in early January.  In between, celebrations can be found Gallows Bay, St. George Village Botanical Gardens and many more.  Many island non-profits hold benefits that are a great chance to get dressed up and out in the St. Croix social scene.

Spend time with your island family

Once you’ve lived on St. Croix for a year or so, you’re sure to find an island family.  A special group of friends which feel like a family you’ve mutually chosen.  Those are the people you’ll want to spend Thanksgiving, Christmas and other holidays with when you’re away from home and aren’t entertaining family visitors.  Pot luck dinners with Cruzan cocktails flowing in private homes are a popular choice for locals celebrating together.

Rub it in with your biological family

Feel free to text your family a picture from the beach on a holiday, while they’re busy shoveling snow or stuck in a standstill traffic jam.  Post a picture on Facebook or Instagram enjoying a holiday meal on a pool deck with friends.  Don’t be surprised when they come to visit for the holidays next year!
