Sunday, May 27th, 2012 – Reef Jam in Frederiksted, St. Croix. Celebrate the Reef!

Last Sunday, under some beautiful Caribbean sunshine, the 5th annual Reef Jam rocked out at Rainbow Beach in Frederiksted.

Reef Jam is an annual music fundraiser on the beach and is held Memorial Day weekend. The focus is to provide a fun and interactive way to learn about the reefs on St. Croix and why they are so important. The event “features all local artists, guest speakers, community organizations, a Reeftivity Zone where children play tons of fun reef-related games and can learn how to snorkel,” they may see a dissection of a squid and most importantly, learn about the reefs! “Funds raised at this annual event are given back to the community in the form of Mini-Grants for projects that support the Reef Mission.” (Reef Jam, Facebook Page)

The event had a huge turnout- pumping live music, people dancing, high school reef rap, delicious food, sunshine, smiles and so much more!

Part of the event, later in the evening, entailed a “beach clean up” before the last reggae band came on stage. All activities were tailored to keep people aware of their surroundings and the importance of caring for not only St. Croix’s reefs but the entire island as well.

Fun was had by all and it was for an extremely beneficial cause. We can’t wait for next year!
