Earlier this evening, President Bill Clinton spoke to hundreds of St. Croix residents gathered at Island Center for the Performing Arts for a local democratic party rally.  As part of his wife Hillary’s 2016 presidential campaign trail, President Clinton made a stop in the U.S. Virgin Islands to rally support for his wife’s election and address citizen’s current concerns.  Notably, the territory’s partial exclusion from the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obama Care).

Island Center was packed to its maximum capacity (650 seats) with more people standing behind.  A passionate introduction was made for the president by the U.S. Virgin Islands Delegate to Congress Stacey Plaskett, who declared that along with other territorial delegates, she will vote for Hilary Clinton as the 2016 presidential nominee at the Democratic National Convention.  Tonight’s event was scheduled intentionally prior the democratic caucus meeting, to be held June 4.

An official statement from the Clinton campaign said President Clinton’s purpose for tonight’s event was to “discuss why Hillary Clinton is the best candidate to break down all the barriers holding families back.”

The visit by President Clinton came as a surprise to many Virgin Islanders, as residents of the territory do not have the ability to vote for U.S. president.  A pleasant surprise however, as the territory is largely democratic, the president received an exceedingly warm welcome.

Virgin Islanders may not have the ability to vote for president, but they also pay nothing to the federal government.  Tax dollars stay right here in the territory.
