Earlier this month, a team of 19 Virgin Islands Special Olympians traveled to Los Angeles for annual international competition.  They proudly brought back 42 medals (17 of them gold) and many ribbons.  The team was lead by Jana Lee, head of the Virgin Islands delegation.  The games were broadcast live on ESPN.  The USVI team was welcomed home with a reception and celebration for their families, at which Governor Kenneth Mapp spoke.  Founded in 1968, more than 2,500 athletes from 165 countries competed in the Special Olympics this year.  The 2015 theme was ‘Inclusion for All People.’

The VI team competed in five sports: athletics, aquatics, bowling, powerlifting and tennis.  Athletics is the broadest category at the Special Olympics, which also receives the highest athlete participation.  It includes traditional track walking / running / hurdle events for both individuals and relay teams.  Field events include ball throws, long jump, mini-javelin and shot-put.  Road races at half-marathon and marathon distances are also options in the athletic category.  Modified versions of the walking / running events include assisted walking and wheelchair events.
