Just off the north shore of St. Croix, the ocean floor drops more than 28,000 feet down to the Puerto Rican trench.  This sharp decline creates a “wall” that is an awesome sight for snorkelers and divers (the visibility generally allows snorkelers a clear view from the surface).  The wall is closest to shore in the Cane Bay area, extending down to Renaissance St. Croix Carambola Beach Resort & Spa.

St. Croix’s wall is ranked number six among the Most Scary Places on Earth, according the

The staff of Cane Bay Dive Shop has extensive experience and expertise with the wall.  They rent snorkel and dive equipment and offer guided scuba tours for certified divers (or discover scuba classes for anyone age eight or older interested in learning).  They also have a great map painted at Cane Bay beach, so you know where to enter near the boat ramp to avoid sea urchins, and where to find the marker buoys.

Be sure to check out the underwater carousel horse and fish nursery.  Sea life tends to congregate near the wall including turtles, rays and sharks.  The depth is also inviting to humpback whales as they migrate by St. Croix annually during the winter months.

This activity is fitting for people in good shape and general health.  To reach the wall, the swim to / from the shore line is around 100 yards.
