St. Croix Swimmer Qualifies for Summer Olympics

Caylee Watson of St. Croix, recently qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which will be held August 5-21.

Facts About Olympic Swimmer Caylee Watson

  • She is currently a junior at American University in Washington D.C.
  • Watson will compete in the 100-meter backstroke for the U.S. Virgin Islands Olympic swim team.
  • She lived nearest to Christiansted on-island and graduated from Country Day School (now Good Hope Country Day School).
  • Watson specializes in the backstroke, fly and IM (individual medley: butterfly, freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke).
  • The Frailey Pool at American University has the flag of every country one of their collegiate swimmers has ever represented in the Olympic games.  Watson proudly added the U.S.V.I. flag to that collection.
  • Her love of swimming goes back to her St. Croix roots, as she began swimming at age twelve.
  • Watson’s qualifying swim took place at the Navy Long Course Invitational in early December, completing her 100-meter backstroke in 1:05.21.  This time also broke a 17 year old school record.
  • December 12 she received the call of good news that she had made the Olympic roster from the president of the swimming federation in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
  • Watson represented the U.S. Virgin Islands in 2013 in Barcelona, Spain at the Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) World Championships.
