St. Croix Wins Majority of USVI Sailing Team Slots to Compete at World Optimist Championship in Portugal

unnamedThe Virgin Islands Optimist Dinghy Association (VIODA) announced April 20 the sailors who will represent the U.S. Virgin Islands in the 2016 World Optimist Championships in Portugal.  For the first time, St. Croix is sending the majority of the five person team with three qualifiers.  The remaining two sailors hail from St. Thomas.

The Crucian Open took place April 16-17.  Results are as follows:

Two-handed Club 420 Fleet (pictured below)

  • 1st place: Skipper Taylor Hasson / Crew Kate Klempen
  • 2nd place: Skipper Ethan Hanley / Crew Megan Armstrong
  • 3rd place: Skipper Sarah Hardee / Crew Hannah Tonin
  • 4th place: Skipper Rose Kleeger / Crew Olivia Hanley
  • Rotating crew members included Lucy Klempen and Cade Legrande

Single-handed Optimist Advanced Fleet

  • White Fleet – Lola Kohl – 1st place
  • Red Fleet – Mathieu Dale – 3rd place
  • Other Advanced Fleet sailors competing from the St. Croix Sailing Team included: Atlee Kohl, Dawson Kohl, Lake Sanford, Steven Hardee and Carson Oakley.

Beginner Optimist Green Fleet

  • 1st place: Milo Miller
  • Other Green Fleet sailors from the St. Croix Sailing Team included: Elyssa Franklin, Ariana Schwartz, Sean Hiddleston, Parker Younger, Rodney Moorhead, Alexandra Tonin, Malea Evans, Adele Sanford, Patrick Boring, Sierra Franklin and Hannah Neil.
