Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) Offers Low Impact Water Sport Option

Couple with Stand Up Paddle Boards

Stand-up paddle-boarding (also known as SUP) has taken St. Croix by storm in recent years.  What was once a lesser known water sport is now extremely popular on-island.  Particularly for older St. Croix residents or anyone that’s in average shape, it offers a wonderful opportunity to get out on the water without the high impact risk many other water sports (such as kite boarding) pose.  Unlike boating, you have more control on a paddle board to control your speed and direction, as well as enjoy an up close view of the sea life just beneath you.  The clear, turquoise waters around St. Croix offer prime visibility to see anything from dolphins to stingrays and a wide variety of tropical fish.

If you’re interested in trying stand-up paddle-boarding for the first time, here are some great places to get started on St. Croix:

  • East End Paddle Club at Chenay Bay offers lessons / rentals sales / fitness classes / memberships and storage of boards at the beach. They offer SUP cross and race training classes weekly.  This tour operator also rents boards and gives lessons at The Buccaneer Hotel.
  • Freedom City Surf Shop on St. Croix’s west end (just north of Frederiksted) also offers paddle board rentals, sales, lessons and SUP yoga classes.  They are a full-service surf shop offering equipment and instruction in additional water sports.  They are also connected to a bar and grill.

Chris and Kerri Hanley love the water and enjoy it often from their sailboat.  Whether you choose to enjoy the Caribbean from a boat or paddle-board, the stunning scenery surrounding St. Croix doesn’t disappoint.  If you’re ready to call the big island home, let Chris and Kerri help you find the perfect house or condo.  As St. Croix’s top broker year after year, Chris is the authority on Virgin Islands real estate.  Contact them today and download their free guide the 10 Best Reasons for Living on St. Croix.
