Cruzans to Race in the Kentucky Derby

Who would have thought that on an little island in the middle of the Caribbean Sea that the sport of horse racing would be such a dominant force in the local culture.  St. Croix has long been known for their horse races…riders and horses come from nearby islands to compete multiple times per year at the Randall “Doc” James Racetrack.

It’s this local tradition that peaked the interest of two young Crucians—Kevin Krigger and Victor Lebron. This year, these St. Croix natives will make history at the 129th running of the Kentucky Derby.  In a sport where there are very few black athletes, both of these young men have excelled and earned a place in the coveted Derby.  While black jockeys were the norm in the beginning years of the Kentucky Derby, there has only been one black jockey to run the race in nearly 100 years…and they are both CRUZANS from St Croix, US Virgin Islands.

Kevin Krigger

Kevin Krigger will be riding Goldencents, a favorite among many for winning the Derby.  With the same trainer as last year’s winner, I’ll Have Another, Goldencents and Krigger have a great shot at taking home the 1st in the Triple Crown series.

Victor Lebron

Victor Lebron, riding Frac Daddy, was somewhat of a late comer to the Derby, but will be riding side by side with the others.  He’s growing more confident as Frac Daddy continues to strengthen in the day leading up to this Saturday’s race.

Ironically, both men grew up on St. Croix and both expressed dreams of one day riding in the Kentucky Derby…we’re all very proud of them for their accomplishments and for setting such a positive example for the youth of the Virgin Islands!

Break out your hats and mint Juleps…it’s Derby Time!!!!
