Tips for Islanders to Prepare for Hurricane Season

20150403190649387959000000-oSt. Croix is home to a large population of snowbirds (part-time residents who fly south for the winter from the US mainland). Typically around this time of year, they fly home from the tropics for off-season (May through October). Snowbirds are primarily retirees, but the increasing ability to work remotely across many industries, has increased and diversified this population.

Recently the Carambola Property Owners Association shared tips for their members who are preparing to fly from the Caribbean to the mainland. Here are those recommendations for preparing your island residence for rainy / hurricane season while you’re away:

  • Close / hang storm shutters
  • Bring in outdoor furniture
  • Turn off water / generator
  • Leave a few fans on low and a few windows cracked to minimize mold / mildew
  • Leave your vehicles with full tanks of gas

For those remaining on-island during hurricane season, here are some items to have on-hand (as recommended by, a collaboration between The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)):

  • Water
  • Non-perishable food
  • Radio
  • Flashlight
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle
  • Dust mask
  • Wrench / pliers (for turning off utilities)
  • Can opener (manual)
  • Solar cell phone charger
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Matches
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Band-aids

Be sure to make special preparations if you have children (i.e. baby formula), pets (dog food) or a medical condition (insulin, contacts / glasses).
