The historic schooner Roseway returned to Boston harbor yesterday after a two week sail with 22 summer ambassadors aboard, ranging in age from 12 to 16.  Among them was St. Croix Resident Hunter Tonin, whose journey was sponsored by The Farchette & Hanley Team,  The Buccaneer Resort and The USVI Department of Tourism.

Ship

The Roseway is a 137 foot ship built in 1925 to be a fishing boat.  The ship’s builder was John James and it was constructed in Essex, Massachusetts.  Roseway spends winters in port on St. Croix where it runs the World Ocean School, a not-for-profit venture educating youth.  To fund the school, the crew offers sunset sails for locals and tourists.

Setting

When students came aboard Roseway June 28, they turned over anything with an on / off switch including their cell phones, tablets and laptops.  The focus of their time aboard was learning, community service and fellowship with other ambassadors.  The students learned sailing skills including tying knots.  They also had dedicated time at-sea for reading and reflection.  Hunter in particular was one of the first to spot a whale and showed others how to tie knots, like the turk’s head.
