St. Croix Activity Series: Watch Sunrise at the Easternmost Point of the U.S.

29414_816876970009_5419394_nWhile the easternmost point of the continental United States is located on Key West, Florida, the true easternmost (and southernmost) points of the U.S. including the territories are on St. Croix.  The marker for easternmost is called Point Udall.

In the year 2000, a rock monument was built at Point Udall to celebrate the millennium.  It is a gorgeous place to watch the sunrise over the Caribbean Sea, especially on January 1, as people flock to be first in the U.S. to see the sun rise on a new year.

Point Udall is perched on a cliffside, so the ocean waves crash on the rocks below.  The point juts out into the sea, so waves crash on the north, east and south sides.  For visitors, it is a treat both to see and hear.

Side note: If you’re a fan of the television show The Bachelor, Point Udall is where season seventeen Bachelor Sean Lowe took a group date to see the sunrise.  On that date was his future wife Catherine (Giudici) Lowe, future Bachelorette Desiree Hartsock and runner-up Lindsay Yenter.  The group date concluded with sunset at Sandy Point on St. Croix’s west end.
To get to Point Udall by car, simply take East End Road (on the north shore) until it dead ends.  Short-term parking is permissible in the circle drive.  Be sure to bring your camera!  You can also expect a strong sea breeze, so you may want a light jacket or blanket to watch the sunrise.
