Green Flash–Fact or Fiction?

I have lived in St. Croix full time since 1993 and in all those years I have be looking at sunsets to try to catch a glimpse of this “green flash” that so many claim to have seen.  It’s a little bit like local folk lore…there was even a band here on St. Croix named after the term—“Green Flash”—and by no coincidence they played many Sunday evenings around sundown at the Sandbar, a former beach bar in Frederiksted.    Everyone would joke with each other about the flash…those who saw it would swear that they REALLY saw it and those who had never seen it would swear that they had been taking a sip of their Heineken at that exact moment and what they really saw was a distorted view of the sunset through the green glass of the beer bottle.

In all of my years of looking I have NEVER seen the green flash…that is until last week!  We were coming back from St. Thomas on a great day out on the ocean…we were about half way between St. Thomas and St. Croix as I noticed that the sun was setting beautifully above the horizon.  We took the moment to watch the sunset over the horizon of the ocean while we were actually ON the ocean—not something that we get to do often.  Just a split second after the sun dropped below the line of the horizon, I saw a green elliptical shape appear above the water and then quickly disappear.  I saw the green flash!  Argument over…it really does exist!  Of course, I was sipping on a Presidente, so Chris still claims that I was somehow seeing the reflection of the sun through the green glass.  But then alas…Rick Hasson got pictures of this!  So there you have it, Chris Hanley…I really did see the green flash!  Argument settled—it is FACT!
